Task 15: How does your clan prepare for drastic weather conditions
Thornclan has emergency protocols for drastic weather conditions that threaten the life of the cats of the clan, but the protocols are different in the terms of what the conditions are. The most common threats to the clan are heavy storms and strong winds.
In the case of strong winds, the cats are to stay in the shelters that are low to the ground with the kits and elders getting the dens that are closest to the grounds then medicine cats and the sick and injured before the warriors get the higher dens. The dens that are at the highest points are to remain empty. Warriors are expected to patrol from the ground and the ledges that are used as guarding posts around the camp are not to be used; they are expected to guard from the ground below instead. Kits are not permitted to leave their den and elders are advised to remain indoors too. The fresh kill pile is moved into an empty den on the lowest ground, so everyone has access to it without fear of it getting ruined in the wind.
However, in the case of heavy storms and flooding, the opposite is to be enacted. The dens are again moved around but the kits and elders get the highest points where the chance of flooding is at the lowest, followed by medicine cats, the sick and injured with warriors, apprentices, the deputy and leader below, with the dens at the bottom remaining empty. When there looks to be a storm approaching, extra fresh kill is stockpiled and moved to higher ground. Warriors are not expected to guard but will be sent on patrols and, when the storm relents or the fresh kill grows low, are expected to go and hunt for the clan. They may also go out with the medicine cats to retrieve herbs.
