4: Robinsong Steps Up
Robinsong found herself pacing outside of Thistlestar’s den. When she went to retrieve her apprentice, Petalpaw, she had been instructed to go visit the leader of the clan. Normally, Robinsong would brush it off as apprentices playing games, but Petalpaw was an honest cat, not one to lie, plus the leader was her father so it didn’t seem farfetched that the apprentice would have been given a message to deliver to her.
A moment later of pacing, Robinsong is face-to-face with Thistlestar, who she hadn’t even seen leaving his den. She began to quickly try to apologise for whatever mistake she had made, although she couldn’t remember any recently that could warrant a complaint from Thistlestar: “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what I’ve done, but I’ll do better next time. I promise!”
Thistlestar just let off a chuckle, motioning for the she-cat to follow him. “You haven’t done anything wrong. In fact, this is the opposite of that,” he says softly, trying to reassure the nervous she-cat.
The duo walked towards the rock formation towards the edge of the camp: the location for all of the important clan meetings. Robinsong looked around confused, the clan appears to have gathered around, waiting at the base of the formation as the two step up. “What’s going on, Thistlestar?” Robinsong asked nervously, looking around for quick escape routes.
Thistlestar stopped before making it to the top of the formation, turning around to face the she-cat. “I need a deputy temporarily while Eagleclaw is unavailable. You are the best candidate. The cats trust you to with their lives and I trust for you to make the tough decisions. So, will you be my deputy?”
Robinsong looked at her leader in shock, her eyes wide as she stumbles back for a moment, “I, I’m not sure I can. What if-”
“Don’t think about the what if’s, Robin,” Thistlestar cut in, “you have what it takes to lead.”
Robinsong took a moment, taking deep breathes as she thought over what Thistlestar was telling her. “Alright,” she says quietly, “I’ll be your deputy, but only until Eagleclaw can take her position back.”
So, the cats stepped up, ready to announce Robinsong as the new deputy of Thornclan.
