Sunstorm Gets an Apprentice
Sunstorm rested his head on Swallownest’s back with his eyes closed, snoozing under the sun of Greenleaf. Swallownest was fast asleep and snoring loudly. The cats lied in peace as the stream trickled past as birds chirped, flying overhead.
The peaceful nature was broken by the crunching of leaves behind the two toms, followed by a twig snapping. The apricot tom threw himself up, getting into a defensive stance and hissing, while his companion raised his head and looked around.
“Wow, calm down,” the approaching cat greets while laughing.
As Sunstorm noticed who it was approaching, he calmed down, sitting back next to his mate as Swallownest sat up. “What can we do for you, sir?” Sunstorm asked, ears pricked forward.
“I have an apprentice ceremony today. The orphan kit we found, Harekit, is becoming a warrior apprentice and I want you to be his mentor, Sunstorm.”
Sunstorm excitedly stood up, a grin forming on his face. “Really? You don’t think I’m too ‘reckless’ or ‘impulsive’?”
At that Thistlestar let out a laugh, shaking his head. “Oh, no, you most definitely are, but Harekit is sensible and level-headed, so you two will make a good team and can both teach each other.”
As Thistlestar finishes his statement, he walks back into the forest, leaving Sunstorm jumping in the spot, smiling widely at Swallownest. The cinnamon cat smiled back at his mate. “I’m so happy for you,” he says, whispering the next part, “even if I have been a warrior longer and yet to get an apprentice.”
“What was that?” Sunstorm asks, not hearing what his companion said.
“Oh nothing, come one,” Swallownest replies, forcing himself to stand, shaking off the dirt on his fur, turning back and heading to the camp as Sunstorm trots after him.

Their clan was gathered around the ledge as Thistlestar addresses them, with the sky growing dark as the night set in. The moon shone bright overhead with no cloud in sight. Sunstorm bounced excitedly from his spot to the side of the ledge.
“Harekit, now that you are six moons old, you are ready to become a warrior apprentice. From today, you will be known as Harepaw. Your mentor will be Sunstorm. I hope Sunstorm will pass down all he knows on to you,” Thistlestar announces to the crowd.
At hearing his name, Sunstorm’s ears pricked forward and he resisted grinning. “Sunstorm-” Thistlestar continues, “you are ready to take on an apprentice. I taught you everything I know as your mentor and you’ve proven yourself to be courageous and fierce, someone we all can trust. Now, it is your turn to teach Harepaw all that you know.”
As Harepaw approaches him, Sunstorm lowers his head and touches his forehead to his apprentice. “Great to be your mentor, Harepaw,” Sunstorm whispers, smiling down at him.
While Sunstorm stares down at his new apprentice with pride, the clan began to chant the apprentice’s name. “Harepaw, Harepaw.”
