2. The Deputy's News
Eagleclaw felt her head began to spin as she listened to Cherrycrest talk on about protecting herself now that she’s bringing life into the world. “You will want to talk to Thistlestar immediately, move yourself to the queen’s den.”
Lying down on the ground to keep herself steady, the she-cat found her thoughts drifting away as she stopped listening to the medicine cat. Eagleclaw hadn’t even considered stepping down as deputy. “I can’t,” she whispers, “I won’t, not yet anyway.”
Cherrycrest simply sighed, shaking her head as she looked at the stubborn she-cat. “You are going to need to tell him. It won’t be safe for you or your kits. If you don’t tell him, I will be obligated to. You won’t be able to perform your duties and could put the clan at serious risks if we don’t have a deputy who’s ready to step in at a moment’s notice if Thistlestar needs it.”
“I will tell him, I swear I will,” Eagleclaw says desperately, “I just need more time. I can’t lose my position.”
With a sigh, Cherrycrest lied down next to the other she-cat, trying to comfort her. “Thistlestar wouldn’t do that. He’d find a temporary deputy until your kits were out of the nursery,” she says, attempting to reassure the she-cat.
“You don’t know that,” Eagleclaw snarls, pulling herself away from the cat as she forces herself to stand. She walks out of the medicine cat den, before quickly turning back to look at Cherrycrest.
“You will not be telling him anything,” the she-cat snapped, making sure her fangs were on display as she says this, before taking her leave.
